| | | Help with Fungi IDs Hi
I found both of these on the edge of Upton Heath, Dorset today in a mixed coniferous and deciduous wet wood.
1.
A large specimen at least 10cm across - A Boletales of some form?? Are the dark splodges on the stem caused by the spores or is this the actual colour of the stem?
2.
This was a large fungi, at least 20cm+ across Russula delica, the Milk-white Russula???
Thanks. Jane

| | | Re: Help with Fungi IDs Hi,
the first one looks like Leccinum scabrum - Brown Birch Bolete
The dark bits are scales on the stem which is the normal colour.

| | | Re: Help with Fungi IDs Thanks Neil... I think you are right. Plenty of birch around.
Any idea on the 2nd one? |

The white colour could be from another mould/fungus growing on it.

| | | Re: Help with Fungi IDs indeed the 1st one is leccinum scabrum. I have seen that so many times this year!
I thought the second one could be a russula. |

| | | Re: Help with Fungi IDs I'd be pleased if it was Leucopaxillus giganteus... as I believe it's not that common.... but it was found in a woodland, and I believe this fungi is normally found in fields. Also it is not "tube like", more "dipped". Could you explain "why" you think this is definately leucopaxillus gigbanteus fairplay? Thanks. It would help a beginner like me a lot to know how you got to your ID. |

| | | Re: Help with Fungi IDs Hi Tigger,
Just an 'educated guess' as I have seen this species quite a few times.
The gills for L. giganteus are cream coloured and would go this colour in an old specimen, also I believe R. delica always stays slightly 'inrolled' (cap edge) even when old.
You could just crush the gills - if they're brittle and crumbly, then I've made a fool of myself ! (Do this preferably when everybody's on the 2 day Clumber foray next weekend, then people won't know what a pratt I am !)
