| | | Unusual Lycoperdon mammiforme Anston Stones Wood 21 Sept 2008
Found a couple of Lycoperdon mammiforme growing in B-L woodland on limestone. One was quite normal, but the other appears to have the surface either washed or rubbed off, exposing an unusual brown colour.
I thought I would share with you.

Could the second pic be an emerging Amanita excelsa (var spissa) possibly after rain has washed some of the veil off, (a feature of A spissa)
Cheers

| | | Re: Unusual Lycoperdon mammiforme The second is definitely a Lycoperdon, and I would assume (probably wrongly) that the spores have matured and spread in an irregular fashion, thus appearing at the top of the fruitbody before reaching the other parts. |

| | | Re: Unusual Lycoperdon mammiforme or,
it's where the small white spines have fallen away as the fruit body has matured leaving the smoothe under-surface.

| | | Re: Unusual Lycoperdon mammiforme This is a nice find - 'British Puffballs' states "Rare, mostly western and southern, with a single Irish record, not known from Scotland"
The second photo merely shows the 'olive, bronzy brown' endoperidium beginning to emerge through the outer 'white, sometimes pinkish' exoperidium layer.

| | | Re: Unusual Lycoperdon mammiforme The book was printed in 1995 so all records in it are out of date.
I've never knowingly seen one.
By the way, did you get my reply to your PM, coz I never noticed 'message sent' come up when I clicked submit ?
