| | | Fur-ball ID please Hi
I wonder if anyone has an idea on this I found on an old conifer log.At first I thought slime-mould but after cutting it's quite firm inside.
Size , they ranged from about 3/4 of an inch to just over 2 inches. The larger ones didn't seem to be forming any sort of bracket just a bigger version of this fur-ball.
All ideas appreciated,
thanks,

| | | Re: Fur-ball ID please This is one we have had twice on the WAB recently - it is the 'Imperfect Stage' of a fungus called Oligoporus ptychogaster which can often be seen on the cut ends of conifer logs or exposed conifer roots.
The white fluffy balls are probably brown by now having turned into a mass of asexual spores. The sexual stage is apparently very rarely seen.

Neil. | Just out of curiosity Neil, what are the aesthetics of the sexual stage like? |

| | | Re: Fur-ball ID please Sorry Nick, I am bloody angry, - I have just spent a full 2 hours researching and typing out a long and detailed reply only to have it lost into outer space when I hit the submit button.
A notice came up saying ' security token missing' - I had this problem with the WAB when I first joined but I thought WAB had fixed it - well it's back and I'm really peed off.

Neil. | I appreciate that it doesn't help with your frustration, but I wanted to thank you for the info re. the query I posted on this a while ago as mentioned by JP. That fluff had been baffling me for weeks.

| | | Re: Fur-ball ID please To all those out there who are interested, try to obtain a copy of the Encyclopaedia of Fungi by Gerrit J Keizer ISBN 190109421-9.
It is a Dutch book translated into English, but criticised for being a bit frustrating in certain respects, but full of information and has a good illustration of Oligoporus pytchogaster in both it's asexual and sexual states.
I obtained my copy for only £3 !!
