Iv'ejust been reading of an incedent of someone eating "mushrooms"
in a botanical garden ,

One woman died and another is ill after possibly eating poisonous death cap mushrooms, police said.

The woman in her 40s was pronounced dead at an address in Carisbrooke High Street, Newport on the Isle of Wight.

A few minutes later, police were called to a second address in Newport where a woman in her 20s had been taken ill.

She was taken to hospital and her condition is described as stable and conscious.

The second woman told police she visited the Ventnor Botanic Garden on the island with her husband on September 14 and picked a number of wild mushrooms.

These mushrooms were eaten by both women.

Police have not confirmed the mushrooms were the cause of the death but are concerned there is a link.

A Hampshire and Isle of Wight police spokesman said: "Police have recovered a quantity of wild mushrooms from the address in Gunville Road, Newport. The mushrooms are being examined to confirm their identities, and where they are from."

The Isle of Wight Council, which run the gardens, said in a statement: "While the circumstances are currently being investigated, it appears a large quantity of wild mushrooms - including the toxic death cap mushroom - were collected from the vicinity of Ventnor Botanic Gardenand subsequently eaten.

"The death cap mushroom is not cultivated by Ventnor Botanic Garden - no mushrooms or fungi form part of displays - but is believed to have been growing wild in the 22-acre site. "

I'm not going to speak ill of the dead (I was about to, but it's easy to guess what I was going to say) but I hope the general public start to take notice now of what seems to be becoming a very worrying trend.

At least the dead woman seems not to have suffered a lingering death - it could well have been.

My understanding is that it's a miserable slow and inevitable death!

They didn't say how long it took here to die but i'm pretty sure she would have suffered... as the vomiting took over and severe cramps, followed by hours (days) of excruciating pain as here liver and kidneys are destroyed slowly.

Death can take between 6 - 16 days, but there is often an apparent recovery after a few days before the real bad stuff happens... one of the nastiest yet highly effective ways to poison somebody is to use Amanita's

Yes it's awful, I hear.

I was just hoping that since she didn't die in hospital, it might have been mercifully quick.

Where did you get the story from and when did it happen ?

I'm just surprised I have read nothing about this in the papers.

She ate them on the monday and died on the wednesday.... quick for an amanita poisoning i suppose... but still a pretty damn slow way to die if you ask me
