| | | What Habitat can I find common birdsnest fungus? Is the common birds nest a southern species because my book says it is a southern species. What habitat should I look out for to find it? I haven't actually seen it yet and would greatly like to. |

| | | Re: What Habitat can I find common birdsnest fungus? Hi, I found Cyathus olla last week under a hedge on sandy soil, I can't be more specific than that sorry.
Here is my piccie .
Good luck, I hope you find some. It took me over a year to find Amanita muscaria - so be patient. |

I have spent a very long time looking at typical habitats and substrates. I once even collected masses of nettle stems in the hope that they would eventially appear ... Nothing!
It's just one of those species that until you find the first ones, they remain elusive ... A bit like morels!
When I do find them I may even book a few days off in order to get a few good images .... well you never know if you will ever find them again
John
Edit:
Ooops ... going back to the original question
Bird's nest fungi can be found on decaying wood, wood chip / bark, dead nettle stems and any organic debris really ... or so people say!

On woodchip - formerly at least in the car-park of the Holiday Inn in Crawley - then very surprisingly in the woodchip near the car-park of my place of work in a neighbouring town. I expect, therefore that it grows in many other similar places. |

| | | Re: What Habitat can I find common birdsnest fungus? I found Cyathus striatus beside a track in the woods, amongst grass and, perhaps crucially, on very sandy soil.
Sadly, hard drive failure means I don't have pics any more |
