| | Roger Phillips - Mushrooms 2006 (list book updates) Hello all,
I've recently purchased a copy of Roger Phillips - Mushrooms (2006 version) based on recommendations here, and I'm updating name changes and other references as I find they are out of date.
Because I'm starting from scratch, I figured it would be worth sharing my editing, and hopefully I'll receive some updated notations in return
Name changes are checked with BasidiomycotaChecklist - Home which I think we are all agreed is the latest online source for accepted names for fungi.
p328 (a) Handkea utriformis is now Lycoperdon utriforme
p328 (b) Handkea excipuliformis is now Lycoperdon excipuliforme
p126 (a) Macrolepiota rhacodes var. bohemica is now Chlorophyllum brunneum
p126 (b) Macrolepiota rhacodes - Shaggy Parasol is now Chlorophyllum rhacodes
P240 (Ommission) Agaricus impudicus (I've included it as a note there as those are the most similar Agaricus to Agaricus impudicus
I hope that hasn't opened a massive can of worms as this subject (fungi names) has habit of doing, and I look forward to adding some of your updates to my copy of the superb guide.
Thanks. |

| | | Re: Roger Phillips - Mushrooms 2006 (list book updates) One has to wonder if it is worth buying a book that is so out of date. I was considering buying Roger Phillips, but frankly this post has put me off.
Is there a later (more up to date) version?

| | | Re: Roger Phillips - Mushrooms 2006 (list book updates) Please don't be put off it's a great book, probably the best available at the moment.
I think the pace of change means probably only an online database will be able to keep up, but I bought several books recently and the Roger Phillips book is the most comprehensive by far, a few name changes out of 1,250 detailed photographs and descriptions is nothing in the scheme of things!! (it has proven itself time and again already)
Ommission: p284 Boletus cisalpinus added here as it has similar cap to Boletus chrysenteron

| | | Re: Roger Phillips - Mushrooms 2006 (list of book updates) Two more changes to my Phillips..
p274 (Ommission) Cantharellus cinereus
added it next to Craterellus cornucopioides as it is a lookalike.
(Checklist Notes: Rarely reported but apparently widespread)
p240 (a) (correction) "smell strongly of aniseed or bitter almonds"
(see The Aniseed Prince) |

| | | Re: Roger Phillips - Mushrooms 2006 (list of book updates) I will post more tweaks for Phillips that I've made, but I came across this one tonight.. Quote: Checklist of the British & Irish Basidiomycota Lepiota subincarnata
Notes: Occasional in England. Rarely reported elsewhere but apparently widespread. The illustration in Phillips (Ph) is not this species but Lepiota echinella var. rhodorhiza.
| Which translates to Phillips as,
p133 (g) (Correction) incorrect photo.
p132 (b) (addition) Photo 133 (g) is this species also. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
