| | Pronunciation of Fungi terms and names! This is a thread I've been meaning to start for a long time. It's not trivial at all, just a laugh really- and to find out how people interpret pronunciation of fungi terms.
I was given this idea by Elle and her weird made up genuses
First it was "Nick, is that a Blussula?" and the one that made me laugh was "Shaggy Panterelle" LOL.
When I was younger, about 6 or 7, I pronounced these following genuses in the described way;
Russula - Ruh soo lah
Inocybe - Ihn oh syb
Clitocybe - Clit oh syb
Coprinus - Cop rin uss
Whereas I now pronounce them;
Rush you lah
Eye no sigh bee
Clit oh sigh bee
Ker pry nus
It's weird how you adapt to things, and you see how other people say the genus names etc- things like Chlorociboria aeruginascens are a good one
My Dad winds me up by calling Ceps 'Keps',

As long as both sides know what we are talking about then how it is pronounced is almost irrelevant. We can all just smile to ourselves when we hear the different ways others "incorrectly" pronounce even some of the common names.
