| | | anyone recognise this field guide? Hi all,
I'm a newbie posting on this forum. I've been interested in fungi for the last couple of years.
Last autumn I got a really excellent field guide out of Sheffield library, and came to purchase the same guide this year and just can't find it anywhere. It was similar in size and style to the dorling kindersly guide (approx 7x4", full colour photos throughout, softback) but it had a really useful feature which was that some of the fungi had a "sometimes mistaken with.." feature. So for example, chanterelles were cross referenced with false chanterelles etc.
Does anyone recognise which fieldguide this is from this description. I am fed up of trailing round libraries and bookshops looking for it.
Today I saw what I think was a huge crop of boletus growing on a verge under some beech trees - is this likely in the suburbs?
thanks in advance for any help. |

Could it have been one of the Collins books? There are many, many guides so you'll probably not find the same one! Why not have a trawl online and see what comes up, you might find a better book with more recent taxonomy.
As for the Bolete question, of course it's possible! But which Bolete? Who knows?!

I work in Sheffield, but live about 10miles away. If you read the forum posts you will see that you have some really interesting areas for fungi close to Sheffield (Longshaw and Clumber Park to name just two).
I look forward to bumping into you.
Les

| | | Re: anyone recognise this field guide? You could always ask the librarian. They will have a record of the book and all the details, ISBN number etc.
Having lost a library book in the past, I was presented with a bill that contained all the details of the missing tome. I could have bought the replacement a lot cheaper from Amazon!

thanks for all your replies. I havent asked the librarian as my memory was too vague about the details - I didnt know the title, author, edition or publisher, only that it was a fungi field guide. I'm sure theres lots of other very good ones out there.
Thanks for the location tips Nettle runner. Havent visited Clumber park, but know longshaw and padley gorge reasonably well. I also went on a sheffield wildlife trust fungal foray to Wyming Brook last year which was really excellent.
I might go back and have another look at my boletus today, armed with a guide!
thanks all. |
