| | | Gomphidius glutinosus and Suillus bovinus? Plenty of mushrooms about yesterday, I love this time of year. Mainly searching under conifers, I found Russula emetica, R. ochroleuca, various Lactarius, blue-ish Cortinarius, Chanterelle (past their best unfortunately), Amanita fulva, A. muscaria, Shaggy Ink Caps, too many fungi to remember! In a spruce plantation there were literaly thousands of these Giant Clitocybe/ Paxillus-like things whatever they are-
Quite impressive displays of Spotted Tough Shank:
...and the squirrels are at it again.....
Back to the subject. I'm pretty sure this is Gomphidius glutinosus. Last time I saw this was years and years ago. Some books list them as rare, some not so rare. Unfortunately they might just have got a bit rarer as I knocked this one over to photograph it . I wonder if they are one of those species that only turn up maybe every ten years or so. I would be interested if anyone has any thoughts on this.
I found a few of these Boletes under Scots Pine. I reckon they might be Suillus bovinus but I would like a second or more opinions, ta . |

I would say you have bovinus. Like your Gomphidius it grows under pine.
Don't know anything about the fruiting frequency of the Gomphidius but it certainly hasn't been recorded in North Yorkshire for over 75 years.

| | | Re: Gomphidius glutinosus and Suillus bovinus? Hi Nick in Scotland !
Your 1st species is Tapinella atrotomentosum (formerly Paxillus) typically arising from underground pine roots.
The Collybia maculata you have there is far, far taller than any I have seen in my neck of the woods. Someone feeding them whisky ?
As for the Bolete in the tree - I reckon the culprit is an amateur fungi hunter who couldn't put a name to it ! - No, your right, it's a squirrel.
And the rest of your IDs look right.

Neil. | Mst definitely T. atromentosus. Isn't that a Russula in the tree? Nice record and pic of G. glutinous which is certainly very uncommon to very rare in southern England, known only from a handfull of counties. It is more likely to be found in Sotland I would say. I have only ever come across it in Finland with spruce.

| | | Re: Gomphidius glutinosus and Suillus bovinus? Yer right Andy, that is a Russula in the tree (now that I've enlarged the image)
So Mr Squirrel might be innocent and it could well have been a previous human frustrated forager after all.

The things you come across in the woods.
As for the squirrel Russula it wasn't me- honest . I'd say it was a R. sardonia but should have asked the squirrel to do a peel test and a spore print . | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
