| | | Its never easy!! Craterellus? Lentinellus? I found these under beech, growing on and around an old cut stump. I'm finding this a real poser, I started looking at the pleurotus family but i couldn't find any that stood erect like this and with the funnell joined at the base opening as you move up the stem. the colours are close to Lentinellus cochleatus and as i write this i'm thinking it is perhaps closer than my first look. but the smell was not aniseed as more sweet pungent & heady. There was no milk when i cut several to be sure so i ignored lactarius (possibly foolishly) I've ended up with pseudocraterellus, i have only one reference and the gills dont run into the stem with the deep furrows. again colour may be a blind alley
Any help please

alex | Hi Alex,
It is Lentinellus cochleatus, but macroscopically somewhat atypical in shape.
The edges of the lamellae are markedly serrate and that gives it away.

| | | Re: Its never easy!! Craterellus? Lentinellus? Thanks, found this gem on sunday about 50' down hill from some that i have been tending too. I found a smaller one that a rodent had tried to drag into its hole and had got stuck in the enterance it had litte chomp mark all round the cap edge and pores, today i found one with a deer hoof stomp on it so the game really is hotting up. I've just realised how similar my avatar is to yours dont worry i'm not related to any serial storkers, but i do have to ask is that shroom in your avatar real? |

| | | Re: Its never easy!! Craterellus? Lentinellus? Stewy, Sorry for being a sceptic, I'm not very competitive but when it comes to food i might have to take up deer stalking just to keep the ceps coming.
