Being a novice I looked at the slug damage on the one I found (see picture above) and decided to leave it. I notice some of yours had similar marks, would mine have still been good to eat? Would be good for me to know for next time! |

These are either spikes or a network of lines and often a combination of both. Pterosporus takes this to the extreme and the spores almost have wings. This photo gives you an idea (borrowed from the web) but even this does not do it justice. At high magnification the "wings" are too big to get into focus all in on go

It certainly had the WOW factor.. in fact I seem to recall my actual words as I spotted it on a hillside under trees was.. "WOW... ark at ee!!!"
BTW Sickener, you can eat the slug chewed fungi, simply cut around the damaged parts, it's the maggoty ones take a lot of skill to recover, and then I swear they taint the taste.
