It looks like Postia caesia but that should only grow on conifer. Postia subcaesia grows on deciduous trees but is less blue. Yours looks quite blue to me????

| | | Re: Pale Blue/Grey Bracket. Hi Julie - Have a look at Bjerkandera adusta - can be blue. Grows on similar substrate - dead wood of broad-leaved trees.

Julie | If that is a hazel trunk (fallen) then it's Postia subcaesia Julie - but the substrate just doesn't look right to me ! And the bracket is VERY blue (whereas P. subcaesia isn't very blue - hence the epithet ' subcaesia' !!)
Are you sure there aren't any very old fallen coniferous trunks in your habitat ??

| | | Re: Pale Blue/Grey Bracket. I think the genus Postia needs looking at again as I quite often find they don't always tally with the literature.
A few weeks ago I found a Postia sp. much more strongly blue than the one shown here growing on a dead Rhododendron branch.

Neil. | I agree with that Neil - and some molecular work to try and sort some kind of order out, was done on this group, at Kew, whilst I was there which was published in one of the more esoteric journals.
But I think that there is still confusion - of the greyish-bluish species basically there is P. caesia (which is a conifer saprophyte), and there is P. subcaesia which is a deciduous wood saprophyte BUT there may be (in fact I know that there is !) more than one species floating around in what is termed P. subcaesia !
That situation is compounded by the suspicion that the type specimen of P. subcaesia might NOT actually be the species which is commonly called P. subcaesia in this country or elsewhere in Europe !
And I also know that there is 'something' (a rather large, thick-fleshed, bluish-white thing with a hairy surface) that is related to this group but is undescribed at present - I know, since I find it commonly on fallen branches of ash and it's certainly not P. subcaesia as I [or others] understand that species !
