| | Unidentified Bolete, possibly B. badius Are you sick of me yet? I am
This is either really incredibly simple, or something annoyingly difficult.
I photographed this yesterday, thinking it was a Bay Bolete, but when I looked at the photo, the cap looks nothing like the deep chocolate brown of B. badius. Just wondered is anyone could think of something that mine might be? Bruised blue the same as B. badius.
80mm in height, with a cap diameter of about the same.
I look forward to some feedback,
Cheers |

"Boletes may be recognized by the fact that they have tubes under the cap instead of gills. Also, the tubes may be peeled from the cap, in contrast with those of the Polypores. There are many boletes that bruise bluish to greenish.

| | | Re: Unidentified Bolete, possibly B. badius OMG HW, that is a long list. Nick I thought your pic was a B. Badius but as you know I am no expert. This is the shroom that I find the most in my area. However, I have noticed that the cap colour can vary from the deep brown to a lighter brown. Now there's me just thinking they're all B. Badius but by the looks of HW's list I am probably completely wrong. |

Badius can be smooth and sticky when wet or tomentose when dry and I think you find is just that.

But if it is, the cap appears to be hydrophobic. Can this help id?

Your mushroom is unuestionably B. Badius. Although grouped together, there are 2 distinctly different types. One has a uniformly even stem with a large (up to 15cm)chestnut brown cap which early in the morning, or after rain will be slippery and viscosy. The second, has a velvety cap, also chesnut brown. repells water largely is more domed and often has a fat stem like a porcini (B.Edulis) The stem (on cutting) is also pure white flesh and firm. These mostly only grow to 8 to 10 cm dia.
Hope this helps.
