Chalk-white cap under oak pores starting yellow then orange then red. Stipe stout bulbous yellow at first then reddening I would say Boletus satanas but never having seen one
The stipe should have a red network on but it is not easy to see in the photo?

Julie | Hi again Julie - that looks suspicoously like Boletus satanus to me !
Very young basidiomes but..........a nice find !! Most of the collections I have ever seen are always elderly and somewhat manky / smelly - it seems to one of those boletes that putrifies very rapidly so you are lucky to have it in this pristine condition.
Nick
PS It would be nice to know where you found this - if from Ashridge (Herts) I note that the species has apparently not ever been recorded from that county. Would you mind sending me a private message with the details (date found, habitat, location, etc) and then I can add that record to the British / Irish Records Database. And I need your surname as well please !

Do stems reticulate as the fruiting body grows? and if so would this explain why its not possible to see any evidence in the photos? |

But a good question !!
