The name B. satanoides is a nomen dubium i.e a dubious name - dubious simply because there is no type material extant, so no-one has the faintest idea exactly what the name B. satanoides means as a specific unit.
However the name B. satanoides has been used in the past, by several authorities, to refer to the taxon now known as B. legaliae (of which there IS type material).
And, in answer to the original question, macroscopically B. legaliae has a very much darker pileus than B. satanus ! (for starters !)

Julie | Well, if you can find Devil's Boletus then I'm pretty sure you'll find Fly Agaric soon! I'm seeing a lot of these under spruce stands (Fly Agaric that is!) as I search for Boletus edulis and these two do seem to have a fondness for each other. Also look out for birch trees as the Fly Agaric grow near them.
As for the Boletus satanus find, all I can say is well done |

As for the Boletus satanus find, all I can say is well done  | Cheers Nick ..Found a couple of Boletus edulis at Ashrdige but the Deer had got them first..Im off with my Daughter later this morning..to a Spruce , pine , and birch woodland..who knows what we might find..Im keeping my fingers crossed...
