| | Cortinarius ID First off, I think this is a Cortinarius.
Secondly, based upon the first thing, I apologise We all know that it's not the easiest genus to identify
It might not even be Cortinarius! I plucked a smaller specimen to look for a cortina and there was one. I'm sure I'll find out soon (When Karl Soop joins WAB LOL )
Let's get down to business. These were spread out in a nice troop near to an oak tree on sandy soil. Lots of juicy moss present.
Max cap diameter, 70mm, you can calculate the stem size proportionally using the photograph. I didn't remember it smelling of anything and you can be sure as hell I didn't taste this one
All input appreciated greatly,
Nick |

Nick | Yes, a Cortinarius as suggested, and a lovely photo of a Cortinarius Nick - but that doesn't get one very much nearer any specific identification unfortunately !
It's one of sect. Telamonia I think. [I hate to think how many hundreds of those there are to choose from !]

| | | Re: Cortinarius ID Ah well, getting the genus right is good enough to put my mind at rest and learn a bit more Cheers for the Telamonia hint, but you owe me some Nurofen mate! Thanks for the comment on the photo, I figure if i'm to get anything identified, I have to be quite choosy with the quality of images to up the possibility of a positive ID! Unless we're talking Russula, Cortinarius or Inocybe LOL |

Your photo's are not bad at all Nick but if you REALLY want to excel you should aim for the quality of Fungi John's photos - they are (virtually without exception !) STUNNING ! and show all the detail needed in crystal clear clarity !
Nick
PS I don't take cheques for under a tenner Fungi John !!! |

| | | Re: Cortinarius ID Well, I've tried and I've tried, but his secret is immensely guarded. Plus, I'm still well young, I've got loads of time to master it I look up to John, he's a serious inspiration and a massive part of why I'm so interested in fungi. |

Oh, don't mention the book I've been writing the thing for 3 years now and it's still no nearer to completion ... but its sheer joy in doing it
