| | | Bolete from Little Stones (ID please) Little Stones, Anston 27 August 2008
Found 18 large Bolete growing under a young Oak tree in grassland.
Cap dia 180mm typically
Stem 80mm across
Smell sweet mushroomy at base of stem
Cap dry and velvety. the whole cap is spongy.
Colour change in cap when cut, gradually becoming pink & reddening.
I think I have Boletus impolitus.
Your comments and observations welcomed

| | | Re: Bolete from Little Stones (ID please) Boletus impolitus would smell of iodine at the base, not sweet and mushroomy. Everything else fits though |

It must be my quirky smelling tackle
Once I had got home and looked in Plilips, I felt fairly sure of the ID. Until Nick (L) comes along, that is

One thing I can say is it is not impolitus Impolitus has a pale yellow flesh with a darker yellow above the gills and along the edge of the stipe. No red flush like your find. It might just be Xerocomus bubalinus a recently discovered species. If Nick does not come up with an instant dismissal of my suggestion it would be one for Kew.

Les | You could have Les (see I do agree with some of the diagnoses !) - it's got the reddish coloured area on the stipe and there is no trace of bluing when cut open (but distinct reddening by the look of it) but you should have been able to smell the 'iodine' smell that Nick C mentions, quite strongly if it was B. impolitus.

| | | Re: Bolete from Little Stones (ID please) My problem is that I have no recollection of the smell of Iodine
I have a vague memory of it being around when I was a child (not sure what for) but don't recall any smell. Did it come in a small brown bottle, with a rubber dispenser on the top? or is that something totally different?
It looks like I need to find some to have a sniff
Les

Les | It's the smell of hospital wards / corridors (as in the in olden days, when I were a mere youth starting out as an NHS Pathologist).
The smell that let you know that you were NOT going to get infected with the 'superbug' MRSA just by entering the hospital, as seems to be the case nowadays !
