| | | Help with identification - Yellow Stainer? - Agaricus xanthodermus? Hi All
not been on here since last autumn - but I have been collecting pictures of many interesting fungi - so I'm back for this summer/autumn - now that my finds are getting more frequent.
I found a big cluster of these growing beneath bushes in my local park - they looked most appetising - but i fear they are yellow stainers - probably because they stained yellow when scratched.
Would just appreciate a second opinion.
many thanks.

Agaricus arvensis will turn yellow when bruised but it takes some time for the reaction. Xanthodermus turns yellow almost immediately. The other difference is the smell arvensis smells of aniseed and xanthodermus slightly of iodine

That's one that you are unlikely to misidentify in the future. I found a large patch of them yesterday

| | | Re: Help with identification - Yellow Stainer? - Agaricus xanthodermus? Do you have any available to check the caps for staining?
I found some a couple of weeks ago, and on scratching near the margins of the cap, the "chrome yellow" staining is immediate and very obvious. - They also smell like iodine/ink.
This thread shows the images: - ID's on these OK (I Think!).

| | | Re: Help with identification - Yellow Stainer? - Agaricus xanthodermus? I have a couple of caps and gave them a good bruising - I wouldn't say they're not yellow, but I couldn't get them to do them as impressively as yours. |

| | | Re: Help with identification - Yellow Stainer? - Agaricus xanthodermus? The physical characteristics of your examples seem to look right, but as you say, the yellow staining is not very pronounced.
As I can only go by the ones that I found, (and having found them as yet only the once), I don't think I would be confident in giving yours a yes or no.
Perhaps better to wait until someone with more experience gives a verdict.
