| | | Boletus aereus, Craterellus cornucopioides..... Hi,
Been off the computer for a while due to the sad death of my father. However, nothing like a bit of fungi hunting to relax the mind (I walked for hours), and what a weekend. Too many finds to mention and my camera battery packed up just at the wrong moment but here are a few that I captured....
Boletus aereus
Craterellus cornucopioides (Horn of Plenty)
Leccinum versipelle
The Horn of Plenty was amazing. I found a little patch of small examples when I took this photo (just as my battery died) and then found a patch that covered the forest floor - there were hundreds! I will try and go back and get a better picture. And never seen such a fine example of Boletus aereus.
Also saw Boletus edulis, Hydnum repandum (in numbers), Boletus badius and Fistulina hepatica to name but a few. It's looking good out there |

Are you sure it was versipelle. With such a bright cap and orange on the stipe it might be quercinum.
Which of these two does it look most like

| | | Re: Boletus aereus, Craterellus cornucopioides..... Hmmm... it does look like the first example (on the left). The thing that made me think it was versipelle was that there were several fruiting around a birch tree (with Leccinum scabrum too) and the base of the stipe changed from white, to blue and then black when cut. |

I now do NOT think that it is versipelle.

Pete | Sorry to hear about your loss Pete - I know how it feels !
Hmmm.....slightly confused - I thought that it was L. quercinum (with that very dark lateritic-red cap !) but you say it was with Betula (and growing with L. scabrum !)
It's not L. versipelle though (cap far too dark in colour and there is obviously no trace of the typical 'overhang' of the cap around the edge, as one would expect in that species) - that can clearly be seen in the second set of photo's, in the group on the right of the picture !
So, I suppose it's L. quercinum - are you sure there were no oaks anywhere around - even one tree ??

| | | Re: Boletus aereus, Craterellus cornucopioides..... Hello Nick,
I went back to the spot this morning. There were more examples of this fungus starting to fruit. They are around an 'island' of birch trees in a forest clearing. However, in the middle of this cluster is a single small oak tree. So, I guess mystery solved, it is L. quercinum. Mind you, they are still fruiting with L. scabrum, so the roots must be close together.
