many thanks Alex

Luridus has a strong reticulation (a net like pattern) on the stipe and as your specimen has is punctate (dots on the stipe) it is not luridus. I think you have Boletus luridiformis (formerly erythropus). Still a nice find.

| | | Re: Boletus luridus???? Thanks flaxton, seams obvious now. I'll go back and confirm, but there was something that wasn't sitting well with my i.d and the lack of reticulation on the stem was bang on. Edible, not sure i want to try them as the things that struck me most were the lack of smell and the frequency of maggots, I've just bought a whole lamb so I'm ok for protein.

Mal | Hi Mal - I too was thinking along your lines as well, but if you look at the picture there are sparse orange-reddish punctae on a pallid yellowish ground at the apex of the stipe, which then gradually become very sparse toward the very pale coloured base !
All of the illustrations of B. luridiformis show a fungus with orange-reddish punctae on a pale ground but then gradating in an increasing fashion, to a much darker reddish-dingy brown base.
But what else it could be I don't know !
I hate boletes !!!
Nick
PS Just notice the stipe base in the third picture down - that is typical of B. luridiformis so I'll shut up now !
