| | | Dichomitus campestris again? I went for a quick walk round our rather wet golf course today and I think found a much better specimen of Dichomitus campestris.
I did find a dried out specimen earlier this year which was confirmed but this is much better
Also found a couple of Inonotus hispidus
got a decent photo of Mycena sanguinolenta in situ
But then found this which I have no idea about
Thanks

Next question Mal - firstly did you collect it ?, and secondly do you remember if it was it on a fallen or an attached branch ??
And - do you have a microscope - if so it might be worth trying to find some spores if possible !!
It's either a resupinate basidiome of Trametes versicolor OR something much more interesting (but I shall keep my counsel until you can find if there are any spores !!)

Nick | First answer No I was wearing my "in charge of the golf course" hat rather than foraying one. Second answer it was on a fallen branch. I do have a microscope so I will go back and collect it tomorrow and try and get some spores. What am I looking for?

Particularly large (for a polypore), elipsoid-cylindric spores, 13-15mu long, and appearing minutely rough, in longitudinal ridges [although that may be difficult to see - if there are any spores that is !!]
Or, if just Trametes versicolor, not particularly large spores !!!!
Nick
PS I doubt if it will just give you a spore print ! You may have to 'remove the inside of one of the tubes' and look at that under the scope, to see any ! Just make a section vertically down through some of the tubes and gently scrape out the inside of one of them - that should show you spores if they are there !

| | | Re: Dichomitus campestris again? Hi Nick,
I would have quickly dismissed this as Schizopora paradoxa, what is so different about this that tells you it isn't ?
