| | | Daldinia concentrica as substrate
Possibly interesting, an old Daldinia concentrica supporting a community of Bisporella sulfurina, according to Ellis + Ellis, Very common on stromatic pyrenomycetes!

Cheers J.P. | I expect it would be JP but that isn't Bisporella sulphurina which is an unmistakeable brilliant sulphur-yellow colour !
I think what you have there is an Orbilia but the photo is somewhat indistinct ! Possibly Orbilia inflatula but that is just an educated guess !
Still, I have never seen that on Daldinia ascocarps either !

They don't make this subject easy, in the fungi on fungi section Orbilia dosen't get a mention. is this odd enough for kew.
I think a couple of years of WAB and you will have to re-write the books,
I can see it now, the documentary of your promotional tour and i will say to
people, oh yes i knew him when he had little more than a good sense of humour.

Cheers J.P. | Hi JP - yes, it might be actually - I can find no mention of any Orbilia sp. on old Daldinia ascocarps.
I would have said that it was probably O. inflatula but as I said that was just an educated guess and it might be of interest to verify it !
So, if dried off, could be sent to Dr. Brian Spooner at Kew - I can supply the address. BUT must be dried off first!!
Nick
PS I should also add that Ellis & Ellis, although very good does NOT cover everything by far - so not suprised you did'nt find an entry for Orbillia in the Fungi on Fungi section. |
