Thanks,

I would suggest Russula sororia given the image and your description. It is quite common on Lime Tree Avenue too!
John
p.s Russula fellea smells of geraniums ... electric, but it's quite a different species.

| | | Re: Russula ID ? The striations (grooves) around the cap edge fit, and when you go back tomorrow, if it tastes as bad as it smells (oily'ish!), then as Nick suggests, it probably is R. amoenolens
When I found 'this' on a foray a few weeks ago, we could not decide on what the smell was - two said oily, but one said 'of mango's', which really messed things up because if it is fruity it is something else.
I hope Nick can come in on this thread to sort out the amoenolens/sororia mess - to me, they are the same, but in Phillips he separates them.

R. amoenolens is **cough cough** and it has **cough** whereas R. sororia is **cough ** and has a **splutter** Hope that helps you novices.
Oh, that Nick |

Neil. | No he can't Neil - even me !!!
This section Pectinatae are rather difficult even with the material there in front of you and need to be looked at carefully, and microscopically, and the smells should also be noted BUT are quite subjective.
Yes, I would have said it was R. amoenolens (or just perhaps R. sororia [they are separate taxa] both of which are usually associated with oaks but then I noticed that it had been found with Tilia sp. (limes) thus one has to start thinking about R. pectinata or R. pectinatoides !!
I don't think that it's either of the latter two actually - just does'nt look right colour wise, BUT then thats really guessing and (here it comes !) WE SHOULD'NT DO THAT SHOULD WE ??
Lovely photo though !!
