7) Bolete? | Species are..................
1. Probably young Exidia nucleata (before it's had time to form the characteristic crystal of oxalic acid in the fruitbody !)
2. Lepiota ignivolvata - fraid not - more like Collybia butyracea var. asema with a stipe like that !
3. Coprinus sp. - indeterminate !
4. Lycoperdon molle (probably) - the exoperidium is covered in a mixture of tiny scales, tiny spines and also some spines that are convergent at the tips. But really needs the spores looked at !
5. An old, faded, basidiome of Peniophora quercina (on an oak stick by the look of it !)
6. Mycena sp. - indeterminate !
7. Can't say anything from this photo - doesn't look like a Bolete though !

| | | Re: A Compilation of Fungi ID From Last Year No. 3 doesn't look like common ink cap, because common ink caps are more torpedo shaped and grey coloured. It does look like some kind of ink cap, as mykonik said, because the edges look like they're starting to dissolve into ink. My first thought on seeing the little picture was it might be some kind of crumble cap (Psathyrella) but I'm not sure any of them go inky (Anyone?).
No. 4 is a puffball, not an earthball because it is raised on an obvious stalk. I'm not sure about the exact species so I'll gladly defer to mykonik's suggestion
No. 6 is not a mottlegill because the habitat is wrong. Mottlegills usually grow amongst grass and I'm not aware of any that actually grow on wood but I'm happy to be corrected. I think it's a Mycena too- lots of these grow on wood. Mycena species are small, dainty things with usually conical caps rather than the mottlegills which tend to have bell shaped caps. Unfortunately little mushrooms are not just limited to mottlegills or Mycena, there are many others.
I would have said No.7 was a Russula with a fair degree of certainty if it wasn't for the apparent point in the cap. Russula have a characteristic general shape which I can't really explain in words. In any case, I'm fairly sure if you turned the mushroom over you would find it had gills rather than pores, thus ruling out a Bolete. I like to think that Boletes have a plump shape with swollen stems and rounded caps- the jolly fat characters of the mushroom world. As always, there are many exceptions.
Hope this helps a little with your mushroom foraying this year. Could be a good season what with all the rain in the UK recently. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
