| | | Lactarius under Oak for ID please Little Stones, Anston 6 August 2008
Found two fine specimen growing under young Oak, in ancient grasslands.
Cap dia 100mm
Stem 80 x 15mm
Smell distinct smell
Taste Mild at first, gets warmer but not hot. Milk rather scarce when gills cut.
No noticeable colour change on cutting in half
I did consider L. chrysorrheus, but lack of milk and taste does not seem to fit.
Also L. quietus seems too small, and taste not right.
Does the milk "dry up" with age, and loose its taste?
Oh, and how would one describe the fine white "web" under the cap?
Your comments and observations welcomed
Les

I think I would also, though the specimen in the pic look as if it has the stem of L. quietus and the cap of L. chrysorrheus? I think the webby stuff is a mould of sorts.

| | | Re: Lactarius under Oak for ID please I would say L. chrysorrheus and that the mould has weakened taste and affected latex production possibly.
