Les | The thread title suggested Daldinia vernicosa Les but on seeing the image I'm not sure

John | Actually John, you could well be correct - this MAY be the very young stage of Daldinia vernicosa, with the developing ascocarps initially covered in the asexual (conidial) Nodulisporium state, prior to maturing and developing the sexual ascospores.
The only way to find out would be to re-find it at a later date and see what has happened.

| | | Re: Fungi on burnt gorse for ID please It appears that we have Daldinia vernicosa down as a synonym for Daldinia fissa whereas the Index Fungorum has them as distinct species and I can find little else by way of reference. Would someone like to enlighten me please?

| | | Re: Fungi on burnt gorse for ID please Yes - definitely Daldinia vernicosa - or whatever the current name change is - and 'pah' I'm fed up of un-neccessarily (thats my opinion ) having to learn a new name for stuff....... but I'm getting my hair off and off track here - yes it is and as it matures it turns glossy black with remnents of the beige bits remaining Good Find!
