Unknown LBJ Fungi for ID please

Anston Stones Wood 24 July 2008

Found a few growing separately under Beech trees, in soil. (B-L woodland on limestone)

Cap dia 20mm dry, and delicate (breaks easily, no milk)
Stem 50 x 2mm and brittle
smell slight, not mushroomy.

Hi Les

It's a Conocybe, but that's as far as you can go with this genus without a lot of microscopy.

Hi Les,

The first species is a Conocybe sp. The second looks like M. acicula orange-red cap with a yellowish stem.

I think the third photo actually shows a young Conocybe. I don't think it has the right jizz for Mycena acicula... but without a spore print, who can say for sure.

Sounds sensible to me. I must admit my first thought was Mycena acicula for the third picture, but I don't know that one first hand. I think you do.

Maybe it is a young Conocybe? That could be pruina I can see along the stem? I suppose Les may have the answer to this? you wouldn't happen to know the gill colour of the mushroom in the 3rd picture, would you?

Andy
As the small fungi was growing in close proximity to the first, then I had assumed it was the same sp., and did not check.
Will check it out this weekend.

Re: Unknown LBJ Fungi for ID please

Hi Les
I have found acicula regularly and is more common in damp areas but it also only has 12-16 lamella. Looking at your photo although we cannot see the gills directly it seems to show many more than that. So I would say it is much more likely to be another conocybe.

That's a perceptive comment, Mal.

It's interesting to analyse what makes up the gut feeling of jizz. I think with this particular specimen, what doesn't ring true for Mycena acicula for me are the striations (of which there appear to be too many as you suggest), the width of the cap compared to the width of the stem (M. acicula has quite a thin stem in proportion to the cap), and the relative colour tones of the cap and stem (which don't seem quite to contrast enough because M. acicula has a relatively pale stem).

Re: Unknown LBJ Fungi for ID please

I returned this evening to re-examine the small fungi

This is how it looks now, with another nearby specimen

and the gills

More than 16 phew Even with Nick on the prowl I am confident it is not acicula
I am less confident in saying (but will do anyway) that it is now likely to be a Conocybe

Well done Les, confirmed, its certainly not M. acicula though you are now in Conocybe territory, good luck.
