| | | Fungi ID help please! Hello! Me again. Went to pick some stump puffballs for dinner and came across two different types of boletus and one other one that I would love to know what they are!
I'm in the process of spore printing them but until they develop here are the piccies.
The first one was growing under a birch tree. 3.5 cm across the cap and the edges turned up so it wasn't totally flat. They were initially yellow and bruised rapidly to a blue. Stem was about 2cm and a light colour turning red where it joined the cap. I thought it might be a red cracking bolete but the cracks were beige/brown not red/pink.
Second one was growing under ash near(ish) beech. 6.5 cm across cap. Cap was a light brown with a few cracks that looked a bit pinkish. Stem had red tinges. It bruised blue upon cutting but then the blue faded away.
Third one was growing near the second one in a clump. They almost looked like they were one mushroom with many fingers as opposed to lots they were that close together. Cap is very very dark grey/black. Smell faint but not mushroomy. This was the large one and was about 4cm wide. |

| | | re: Fungi ID help please! Until someone gives you the correct id I would suggest
the first one is Xerocomus porosporus (spores needed to confirm )
The second one Xerocomus subtomentosus
and the last one I will leave for someone else

| | | Re: Fungi ID help please! I'd agree with Mal on Boletus porosporus for the first one. It's one of the few in this group that I can usually recognise even before looking at the spores.
I'd be less confident about the second one because it doesn't look quite right for B. subtomentosus to me. In particular the reddish tones on the stem, and the colour of the tubes don't quite fit. The flesh also seems to be turning pink but that may just be a trick of the light. I'd guess it is one in the B. chrysenteron group but that's as far as I would go.
And as with Mal, I'll pass on commenting on the third specimen as nothing springs to mind at all at the moment.

Ken | The third one appears to be a Lyophyllum sp. (young basidiome) so probably not identifiable furthetr than that !

| | | Re: Fungi ID help please! Thanks guys! I had suspected B. Porosporus for the first one and chrysenteron for the second one but it didn't look quite right colour wise. As far as the third one goes, I shall have to go back and take pics of it every few days as it develops so I can know what it looks like eventually. Will post them on here when done.
May I ask.....do you have a main book you use for this? I discovered the collection of mycology textx in the library yesterday and nearly died with happiness! They have the whole series of Mushrooms of Switzerland among others and I borrowed quite a few although a couple of them will be returned today as I didn't like them very much. I have quite a few mushroom books of my own although Phillips is my main one. If you could pick one other book which one would it be? |

| | | Re: Fungi ID help please! For a field guide I would pick either Marcel Bon or Courtecuisse and Duhem, but both are currently out of print.
You might be able to pick them up second hand, although they tend to get bought up very quickly.
The new Marcel Bon has been promised for several years and the latest from Pendleside Books is that it is now scheduled for publication in November 2008. However, it has so far failed to materialise on various publication dates so don't hold your breath. Also, if it is just a reprint many of the names will be out of date.
