| | | Unidentified Red/Orange Mushroom! Haaaaalyp haaaaaylp!
At mid morning today, Myself and Eloise met up with our Yorkshire WAB contingent that goes by the name of Flaxton We had a saunter through the woods of Knettishall Country Park looking for fungi. Unfortunately, Mal wasn't with us for too long as he was off back to Yorkshire tonight- but Mal, was excellent to meet you and I insist we do it again soon! Once Mal left, we had the odd LBJ, Tawny Grisette, Deer Shield, Blusher etc, but nothing came up of any significance. But then my second pair of eyes (Elle ) spotted this little number. It measures about 7cm in length, stipe at its thickest part is about 1cm and at thinnest 6mm. Cap diameter roughly 3-4cm. Didn't really have a clue, then I picked it to give it a smell, and blimey, it smells more of apricots than apricots smell of apricots What on earth could it be It's not a bad find, whatever it is- even if I can sniff it all day. I love the smell! At first I thought something like Tubaria, then I thought Gomphidius, then Hygrocybe...but then I told myself to shut up because it wasn't any of those.
Sorry about the picture quality- quite a dull day at times. I still have the specimen here, should anyone want to know more!
We also found a colony of White Admirals Beautiful!
Sorry you had to leave so early Mal, but you'll be back

It's a Laccaria Nick - possibly just Laccaria laccata in an odd shape - but possibly one of the others in that group - needs microscopy !

We did look at Laccaria sp. but I've picked, handled and eaten Laccaria laccata and I've never noticed this apricot smell. Maybe I didn't make myself clear in that this smelled strongly of apricots I forgot to say it was growing next to a Blackberry thicket on grass beside a path. |

Spores under the scope will reveal all, they are spiny.

It should dry out within a couple of days - only needs very gentle heat.

To dry the mushroom, do you have an airing cupboard or something simillar? I use a food dehydrater which is perfect and it can be used for drying other foods. A very good investment.

Nick | Too right Nick. Unfortunately the dog had a severe attack of pancreatitis so was very sick and we had to leave much earlier than planned. Looking at your photo it would have only added to the list of those I already hadn't been able to identify
It was great to meet you and with a bit of organisation I will try and make the Clumber party but being retired it is surprising how much you have to fit in.

Nick | Hi Nick, you usually find white admirals where there is a lot of wild honey suckle. I know of a few spots where they fly. I could also show you where to see the purple emperor on the wing but then I would have to erase your mind with one of those little flashy pen things that they use on men in black.
