| | | Amanitas for Identification A couple of Amanitas looking for a home in my files.
The first one from yesterday was almost pure white as it was bursting from the ground and its larger brother has some red areas where it had been eaten. When I cut it there was no rubescens red at all in the flesh, also no citrina smell of potatoes. So where next?
The second from a couple of years ago which I put down to excelsa but when I look now, could it be pantherina.
Any thoughts.
Thanks

Mal | Well, I'd have said that the first one was Amanita excelsa or it's var. spissa and that you were correct with your intial diagnosis of the second -also A. excelsa but again maybe the var. spissa.
Thats if there is actually any difference between the two taxa in the first place ! Personally I'm not convinced !
The bottom photo is definitely not of Amanita pantherina - of that I am certain !

Mal | Maybe he was just following orders? (I suspect academic practice is to follow the accepted literature, unless you have concrete reasons to do otherwise.) |

No, not quite that bad - was given some autonomy but always with the feeling of being watched by the powers that be.
