| | | New Boletes I went looking for the Chanterelles today without luck but did find a single Cep which had already been badly attacked by Rabbits et al
Also found a nice collection of luridiformis
While looking at the pores I noticed that some were "full" and I managed to dislodge what I assume is an egg of some description .
The myxos I found are going on the appropriate thread.

| | | Re: New Boletes Driving home from work this morning, I glimpsed some boletes alongside the A3. I reckon they were Larch boletes. IMO it is too easy to id a fungus from a photo on WAB. That is for wusses. Real mycophiles do it while driving past at 30mph.
I might see if they are worth a photo, though the idea of lying on the grass taking photos, while a queue of traffic streams by does not appeal. Especially if they throw their apple cores and worse at me. |

| | | Re: New Boletes It always surprises me what you can spot while driving. For example, last season was not good for boletes but I always like to search for Boletus edulis. At the end of the year I realised that I had found more while driving to know sites than I had in hours of searching on foot. These were all by the side of roads where I'd never seen them before. Once I was driving to the New Forest (just outside it's boarder) at about 50mph when I spotted one. I have also spotted single Chanterelles at about 40mph and a ring of Calocybe gambosa at about 70mph. Really must be careful not to have an accident |

But not a good idea to collect or eat these from beside roads Pete !
Fungi are known to select out and absorb, many toxic heavy metals which occur frequently as pollutants, in high concentrations, by roads and are thus not a good idea to eat ! Boletes are amongst the worst for doing this !
And that isn't scaremongering either !

| | | Re: New Boletes Yes, I know about this and would not pick near a busy road. However, I have no problem about picking by a quiet road in the New Forest. It is never that many. Can this really be worse than somewhere surrounded by cars like Epping Forest? And at least I know where they come from. Unlike buying wild mushrooms from the shops. I can remember a consignment of Cantharellus cibarius that came into the port of Southampton and by chance they were found to be radioactive. Apparently they were sourced to near Chernobyl.
Anyway, having lived and cycled in central London for years I think I have absorbed more than my share of toxins. You should have seen the state of my nostrils after weeks of cycling | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
