| | Pixie Ring for ID A fairy circle to most of the UK, but for those that know the lore.. after the battle between the pixies and the fairies at Buckland, the pixies rule the land west of the River Parret, so it's a Pixie Ring officially
In found this ring in the grounds of Cleeve Abbey, Washford, Somerset, and normally when I see a mushroom of this type I think "one of those small 'uns", and that's about as far I get, but I thought the ring factor should make it relatively easy to identify.
Cap: up to 25mm
Stem: up to 75mm, Solid, No Ring.
Smell: Mushroomy with acidy or rubbery overtones.
Gills: Free or adnexed, widely spaced.
I should have a spore print tomorrow.
I'm not seeing the raised centre "nipple" on the cap you see with Marasmius Oreades - Fairy Ring Champignon, but that could be just because they were young samples.

| | | Re: Pixie Ring for ID Thanks Nick,
I can confirm a white spore print, and with your confirmation Nick, I also found a few "nipple free" photos on the web, which makes more confident about the young specimen conclusion. Marasmius oreades, Pilzfotos micologia.net :: Marasmius oreades Just for info.. on edibility, the general consensus on Marasmius oreades is that it is a good edible especially dried, but should be avoided from manicured lawns including golf courses, as gardeners may have given these an extra dose of weedkiller to kill the fairy ring, which then accumalates in the fruit bodies, so I won't be eating the one I sampled.
Thanks for the confirmation Nick, always great to get second opinions.. and more | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
