| | | Brittlegill for ID please Anston Stones Wood 14 June 2008
Found a single specimen growing in a very old well rotted trunk with soil deposited therein.
Cap dia 30mm
Stem 50 x 3-4mm
Smell v strong mushroomy
Gills and stem brittle
No sign of ring or volva
I suppose that makes it a Russula, which cant be given an ID from pics
Your comments and observations welcomed
Les

| | | Re: Brittlegill for ID please I agree with JP, form and habitat suggest Pluteus. See if you can obtain a spore print. P. salicinus ?

Les | Hi Les, Yes, a Pluteus and POSSIBLY P. salicinus (albeit, in my opinion, somewhat less than the normal glaucous-grey colour it is normally !)

| | | Re: Brittlegill for ID please Thank you all for your guidance on this specimen. Another one I got wrong
I found this specimen the next day, quite close to the previous one, and this I am sure is Pluteus sp. and possibly P. salicinus although the light coloured band around the cap is a puzzle to me.
Cap dia60mm
Stem70 x 8-10mm with slightly swollen base
Not brittle, no milk, no smell
Found on fallen tree trunk quite close to stream, so may have been subject to flood waters.
Am I close on this one
Les

That certainly looks like salicinus to me. If you check in the A-Z especially the second photo you will see the same pale banding and that one was also found on a log in a flood prone area.

I think that this may also be P. salicinus . I'm getting my eye in now
Found 4 old mature specimen growing on a short old well rotted but still standing trunk. This was the best.
Cap 40mm peels to centre
Stem 50 x 5 slightly swollen base
Smell mushroomy
Gills not brittle stem snaps
On the older specimen the gills have turned brown
Am I correct
Les
