| | | Please confirm ID Fomes fomentarius Anston Stones Wood 11 June 2008
Found a number of brackets on fallen BL tree
The young bracket made me unsure of my ID
Your comments and observations welcomed

Neil. | Hi Neil
There are lots of (I think) f. fomentarius near us and the colour is very variable. Many of them have a white pore surface and many have a very pale grey almost white upper surface.

Neil. | Fomes has got the young pores white but I take your point Neil -I wouldn't like to pontificate about this one - the pileus looks right for Fomes - it could be Fomes but it could also be Ganoderma !
Nick
PS Les - you could find out by touching or scratching the pore surface - if it discolours brownish then Ganoderma, if not then Fomes ! |

| | | Re: Please confirm ID Fomes fomentarius I didn't think of something as simple as scratching it (so damm obvious!), I was going to even suggest waiting for sporulation as F.fomentarius spores are longish and the Ganoderma a's are roundish.
Yes, reading up on F. fomentarius, the underneath is whitish/cream when young.

So simple. Thanks for the tip, Nick
