unknown mycena

Had a good day with some small stuff - Marasmius rotula, Mycena spirea, acicula and adsendens all identifies without too much trouble but this one caused more of a problem.

If it had bled milk it would have fitted perfectly with galopus both the spores and cheilocystidia fitted but it didn't bleed

Anyone able to tell me if galopus does not bleed often?

Also found this on a fallen branch of probably beech.

Thanks
Mal

Re: unknown mycena

I've often picked what I thought was going to be galopus but never lactated, perhaps they don't always ?

The second photo I would have said is going to be a Ganoderma sp. but with that orange/ pink colour - I just don't know !

Neil.

Re: unknown mycena

Have you looked at M. archangeliana ?

The second species is very reminiscent of Phellinussp ? But the pinkish colour is a tad off putting.

M. archangeliana sounds reasonable. You probably know this anyway, but if you place some specimens in a sealed container for some time (30 minutes?), then open the container, you should notice a distinct smell of iodine i.e. medicinal. The species is very common in Bucks/Beds.

Regarding other comments, I would have said that if if doesn't bleed, then it isn't M. galopus.

Re: unknown mycena

Do you know of Mycena page? I believe its Norwegian, it's an excellent site, top pictures coupled with micro details and drawings for most of the species covered.

Thanks for that Andy but both the key on the Mycena page and a key I have from Ern Emmett point to laevigata which acording to the Check list is a none British species and with my record of identification I am not going to get too excited

I have found that just crushing one between two fingers is enough. And I think it is more like bleech than iodine, but there is no accounting for smell!

Re: unknown mycena

Now the obvious question, what about M. stipata as the checklist suggests it maybe the species confused with aevigata ?

According to the fungi database, there have been 3 records of M. laevigata.

Database here:Fungal Records Database of the British Isles

It might not be rare, but just under-recorded, or wrongly recorded as something else.
