| | | Unknown Fungi for ID please Sherwood Forest (High Holborn Plantation) 4th June 2008
Found single specimen growing on old fallen BL tree trunk.
The blue is just reflection of the sky.
Cap dia 60mm
Stem 60x8-10mm not brittle no milk
Smell v.distint sweet mushroomy + something else?
Cap peeled easily to centre.
I thought I detected a slight pinkish tinge to the gills on site.
My thoughts are a Pluteaceae sp. Am I close?
Your comments and observations welcomed
Les

Les | You are close Les ! Pluteus cervinus in one of it's many forms by the look of it (as long as it was on wood of a broadleaved tree !)

| | | Re: Unknown Fungi for ID please My thanks Nick for the ID, and for your support Nick C.
I am, however, puzzled by the description in Philips "smell not distinct", as I thought it had a very strong pleasant mushroomy smell.
I'm pleased with myself for getting Sp.

It is also possible that Phillips was repeating details from someone else's description, despite it being a common species, and that description was not accurate. Or the collection he described simply did not smell of much.
I found some Peziza repanda with a very mushroomy smell, but it is generally considered to have an indistinct smell. And I have only ever once smelt apricots from Chanterelles, and yet that is the accepted pong. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
