| | | High and Dry Log with Funghi Sorry about the quality, for obvious reasons I couldn't get closer and I've only a 5x optical zoom on the camera, it was dark and raining at the time too.
A survivor of the flash floods on the weekend, the precarious position of this log made me chuckle..
It's on a rock on the approach to Goliath Falls, on the River Fowey in Cornwall.
My best guess for ID is Plicatura crispa, and no I won't be doing a spore print |

Not that I'm doubting your ID, but I haven't got a great match for Stereum hirsutum in my photo collection, and Google images or online sources aren't throwing any conclusive photos into the mix.
Possibly it's down to the angle, my photos are taking from "above" if the tree was standing, but I'm looking for those nice semi-circular shell shaped formations seen in my photo, I'm not really seeing that in the available photo archive for Stereum hirsutum
It seems like a consistent feature in my photos which is why I'm querying it.. hopefully without diss'ing the wisdom of the great sage mykonik |

| | | Re: High and Dry Log with Funghi I think your log is upside down from position in which they formed, i.e. you are seeing the underside.

Now it all makes sense and the photos match the archive
Thanks for clearing that up J.P.
..and thanks Nick for the ID |

Steve,
The basidiomes in your picture are immature and in fact, the start of the typical brackets of Stereum hirsutum - it (like numerous stereoid and corticioid species) frequently starts off in this orbicular fashion, especially when on the underside of the substrate, these then coalesce and the edges which is growing up vertically become effuso-reflexed (ie. slightly turned back) and hairy on the upper surface - that is the mature basidiome !
