One way to tell the difference visually between the two fungi when they are young is that K. deutsa grows on a flat or vertical surface (esp. on the top surface of Beech stumps or inside hollow trees) whilst B. adusta will more often be seen on the 'under-curve' of a log or whatever it's on, say between 3 & 5 o'clock, looking end on.
(If the clocks have been set back, twist the log round 10 degrees !!)
That is not fool-proof, but perhaps our Mykonik has other tips ?
