Re: Chicken of the Woods

this afternoon alongside the canal was yet another Salix resplendent with Chicken of the Woods, with all the wet lands you have up there you must have hundreds of Salix to wander round, if you come across any fire sites from scrub clearance then that could provide a bonus.

Cheers J.P.

Re: Chicken of the Woods

Yaaaawn, snzzzzz eh, eh what, me ? what's that ? Oh, morning Nick,

Yes, from my bedroom window, here in rainy Suffolk (hoo-ray, rain at last !) I can see plenty of fallen Willow trees in Norfolk.

Find a neglected farm in a river valley somewhere, I would say that's your best bet.

Neil.

P.S. Now where was I ? snzzzzzz......

Re: Chicken of the Woods

we cut a large Chicken of the Woods from a neighbours oak tree a year or so ago.
Tried a little of it but having read that 1 on 10 people can have an allergic reaction to this we didn't exactly try more than a minute amount.
Sadly the rest spent some time in the freezer and eventually found its way into the dustbin.

....out on the Forest this morning there was loads of Chicken of the Woods growing on several Yew trees over about 50 metres.

QUOTE]

Wouldn't it be a bad idea to eat Chicken of the Woods from Yew trees?

Re: Chicken of the Woods

Hi Oldwolf,

All parts of the Yew are extremely toxic (except the red flesh surrounding the seed - still wouldn't try it !)

Therefore it is safe to say the fungus (any Fungus) is going to absorb these toxins so it is advisable not to consume it. Certain people fall ill after consuming Chicken of the Woods regardless of what it is growing on but with Yew, you are asking for trouble.

An expert on this site who used to work at Kew no less, also mentioned Eucalyptus is also suspect.

Neil.
