Having read you information on bleeding stereums I am still not totaly sure but is this a more typical fruit-body of Stereum gausapatum.

| | | Re: Stereum I'm not totally sure either, it could be either S.gausapatum or S.rugosum, both 'bleed' when fresh and both can occur on oaks (as in the photo) the former more so. Both also (can) have a white margin, but the former tends to go raised and wrinkly at the edges.
Perhaps Ken knows of other pointers I'm not familiar with or missed out or got wrong even !

| | | Re: Stereum Based on the overall jizz, I'd put this one down as Stereum gausapatum. The hymenium has browner tones than the pinkish buff or ochre of Stereum rugosum.
If I'm recording Stereum rugosum I tend not to bother bringing a sample back. But because Stereum gausapatum seems less common in the North West I'd still give the spores a quick check (assuming it is fertile) when I got back before recording it as this species. However, whenever I bring both species back to compare the spores, there doesn't seem to be a lot in it. Stereum rugosum seems to have slightly longer spores, on average, but you need to measure a good few to get an accurage picture.
It does seem possible, though, to separate the two by eye, when you get your eye in, as it were.

Ken | I'd agree wholeheartedly with Ken on this one - the colour and 'jizz' are wrong for S. rugosum !

| | | Re: Stereum Ken, at the beginning of this thread, Mal mentions of 'having read your information on bleeding Stereum's which is obviously something I need to brush up on.
However, I cannot find any posts from you on Stereum's although I've a vague recollection of something about Stereum's some weeks back but can't find it.
