| | | Violet Crown Cup We found a group of these yesterday evening- I gather they are rather rare, which is why I have posted a picture of such a ropy specimen. If only we hadn't had all this hot dry weather!

henrya | Hi Henrya,
It might be Sarcosphaeria but could be other things - for a start it's under conifers (pine needles present) and Sarcosphaeria is a beech associate !
There are similar things under conifers such as Plicaria sp. (although they are usually darker in colour) but from the photo it's not possible to say !

Nick | It has been positively identified by the local experts!

Difficult to be sure, but it is obviously mixed deciduous and coniferous woodland.
This isn't a species I have ever come across myself.

The photographer is reliant on fresh specimens of the relevant species appearing within the appropriate timeframe. I know, for example, that Michael Jordan was reliant on people letting him know in good time if they found something interesting and worth photographing.
Other publications, such as monographs of particular genera, may be produced over a much longer timescale and, because they are dealing with a select range of species they can be more comprehensive.

| | | Re: Violet Crown Cup Well that would indeed make sense- cheers Ken.
So when can we see 'Ken's guide to fungi' hitting the shelves then?
DO IT!
By the way, that Violet Crown Cup is a hell of a find if it's been confirmed! |

Ken | This lot definitely is associated with Pines. Didn't see any Beech at all - but some scrubby Sycamore close by.
