| | | Re: Bog Beacon Well i still havn't found the Bog Beacon, but your photo's suggest i better get out in a minute and search another area. (well done).
The polypores come down to pore size and then microscopy, look at underside, if you can see the pores (approx 3 per mm) it is P. brumalis,
if you cant' see the pores (appox 5-7 per mm) it is P.ciliatus or P.durus, Jordan and phillips suggest P.ciliatus is summer fruiting, so P.durus is more likely but really microscopy of spores is necessary, i wouldn't relly on season to much.

Cheers J.P. | All you need to look for is Ash, ground ivy and Disciotis venosa Oh no that was something else
Just need to look for a ditch full of plant debris.

Mal | I found some of those but no bog becon.
on the other hand i did see several fungi, a Grass Snake and listened to a nightingale. so it's always worth looking.
Tommorow i think i may try the valley of the scarlet elf cups, i think i saw what will be the last of those on Wednesday, so time for a replacement.

| | | Re: Bog Beacon I don't know why Polyporus durus(ex badius) crept into this thread, it is totally different in shape, colour, stem, and is much more thinner.
From the photo, no pores are visible on the slightly out of focus underside, which suggest this is most likely P.cilatus.

| | | Re: Bog Beacon Further to my previous post, the photo of P.durus in Phillips is typical of how I see/find it in 8 different sites here in Suffolk, i.e. lop-sided, irregular fruiting body and often several fused together.
Also they grow to a much larger size than either P.brumalis or P. ciliatus, and the whole fruiting body is much thinner.
The illustrations in Fungi of Switzerland show these 3 species very well, unfortunately the same cannot be said for M Jordon's book where P.durus is shown atypical, being an old dry looking (but round !) specimen.
This may be why P. durus was suggested.
