Wink Dung Heap Mushrooms

These were photographed on 4th of May in Somerset, I had to hop over a fence to get a sample, so the cluster shot is a little distant as I was hiding like the "Funghi Paparazzi" to prevent a 12 bore being aimed in my direction

I'm fairly certain I've narrowed these down to Panaeolus semiovatus but I'll throw them in for your opinions..

Smell: Mushroomy
Cap Size: varied, 40mm to 120mm
Stem Size: 150mm
Stem: Fibrous
Substrate: Prime Somerset Horse Manure, oooh aaaar

Spore Print: Black

Anybody know their toxicity and English name.. it smells mushroomy and edible, but the few sources I tried report non-edible for Panaeolus semiovatus.

Re: Dung Heap Mushrooms

I thought it looked much more like Stropharia. Stropharia semiglobata?

EDIT; Just to say I'm aware of the dark purple spores of Stropharia

I excluded Stropharia semiglobata on account of size, which I believe is generally under 50mm, the ones in the cluster probably averaged 100mm.

Re: Dung Heap Mushrooms

'Ello 'ello 'ello, what's goin' on 'ere then Sir? Would you care to accompany me to the station Sir?

I was astonished today to find out that these might be a controlled class A drug, possession of which could lead to a criminal record. Bear in mind that class A drugs include heroin and LSD!

The following common fungi are class A drugs and possession is illegal unless you are taking them to someone licensed to dispose of them:

Gymopilus junonius
Stropharia aeruginosa
Stropharia caerulea / cyanea
Stropharia semiglobata

There's loads more too!!!!!!

I think these are too big to be Stropharia semiglobata, Leif, so I won't go making a magic cake from them

I did read somewhere about toxic mushrooms being used for incense, which I don't think is related to the Class A drug listing, but shows another unusual non-cullenary use for mushrooms, I wonder what that now dried specimen smells like when burned... hmm..

I'd say nobody's put a reasonable case to change my original inclination.. Panaeolus semiovatus and a few learned souls concur so I guess that's an ID

Does anybody here know how to move the images as per this instruction?..

If you can identify any of the images in the 'Unidentitifed' section, please use the icon under the image to change it's title and move it to the relevant 'Identified' category (to help keep the Unidentified Sections clutter-free).
I can change the name but not the folder/gallery it seems.

Re: Dung Heap Mushrooms

I've always had that problem Steve, I think FJ is sorting the whole gallery out. If you post a message under the pictures in the archive that these are Panaeolus semiovatus, it might make it easier for John

Hi Steve

Unfortunately there is no easy way to move images from the unidentified gallery to the main gallery ... two different databases and software versions

I've made a composite image from 3 of your images. If you wish to use this in the main gallery please let me know.

Thanks Nick. I hope Steve thinks so

It also helps to ensure some images make it into the gallery when otherwise they may be rejected through quality issues.

Awsome!!

Thanks for that John.. very nice photo editing
Repost wherever it's required!!

I guess the comments about moving the identified specimens from the unidentified gallery is kind of null and void if the software can't do it !!

Thanks for clearing that up everbody

Panaeolus semiovatus var. semiovatus - Egghead Mottlegill is in the A-Z.

Should the montage of Setve's find be added to the existing entry or is it a distinct variety that requires a separate entry?

It can be added as another image to the original one Richard.
