These were plentiful along the avenue in various stages of growth, but generally as single specimen.

| | | Re: Unknown Fungi for ID please That stipe looks very characteristic of the Psathyrellaceae, and the fact that you say the stem was brittle also sways me in this direction,

This is a species of Psathyrella, just possibly Psathyrella tephrophylla (from the overall colour, stature and look of the thing) but, yet another genus where almost impossible to name things without microscopy !
The pale smoke-grey colour of the gills is indicative of P. tephrophylla but the 'patchy' colour of the gills indicates that this may be poorly fertile or sterile to a degree thus it would be difficult to identify anyway.
