Clumber Park Coprinus species

I’m beginning to wonder about this Coprinus found at Clumber Park. Any comments appreciated.

That's no Coprinus! I think you should think along the lines of a Mycena. The fact that it looks to be on wood, the general colouration including pinkish gills with decurrent tooth, and the clustered habitat suggest Mycena galericulata. I tried but failed to find interveining on the gills.

Sorry about that Leif ... I uploaded the wrong image It's also from Longshaw and not Clumber Park

When I first saw this I thought it may be a young Coprinus picaceus, but having never seen a real one I wasn't sure!

Re: Clumber Park Coprinus species

That's more like it! There are two obvious candidates:

Coprinopsis jonesii: grows on fire sites and burnt wood.

Coprinopsis lagopus: grows on soil in woods and on woody debris especially wood chips.

It looks like burnt ground, suggesting C. jonesii.

Also the specimens I have seen of lagopus all have yellow brown caps covered with fluff, whereas jonesii are darker as per yours. But I'm not sure how predictive these observations are.

But ... there may be others.

Re: Clumber Park Coprinus species

By the way, it is not C. picacea as the scales are too fine and the specimen is too small. The veil on a young C. picacea is 'heavier' and in one piece, then breaking up with age.

Many thanks Leif. It wasn't burnt ground but it's more useful for me to know it's not C. picacea. It is one species that seems quite elusive in my area

It is never common, and according to the Checklist of the British & Irish Basidiomycota it is a southern species.

It looks like I'll have to visit the New Forest area ... which can't be a bad thing
