Re Nicks comment on a possible Hapalopilus salmonicolor image in the Gallery
It did remind me of a species I found on 12th January at Clumber Park on dead Beech.  
Please tell me it’s not

John | Interesting, but it's not ! 
Firstly, it's on beech ( Erastia salmonicolor is a conifer associate) and secondly it's the wrong colour FungiJohn - E. salmonicolor is salmon coloured !
This is possibly some kind of Phellinus 'conk' - sterile by the look of it ! The internal structure that you have demonstrated is very Phellinus-like !
