Mal | Hi Mal !
Top photo is Hymenochaete rubiginosa ! Common, and virtually always on old wood of Quercus, especially very old stumps.
Lower photo is interesting - Phaeogalera dissimulans (= Hemipholiota oedipus) - was this taken recently, since the phenology of this agaric is rather wierd, normally fruiting in the coldest months (November to April but normally Jan / Feb.) and usually on very decayed and blackened leaves of ash (rarely sycamore or hazel) - apparently very uncommon since few records, but probably under-recorded due to the fruiting season !
Nice photo !

Thanks for that. It was taken today Almost certainly on Tilia
Not recorded in Yorkshire for 100 years according to the FRDBI so should I be drying and getting it checked.

Mal | Hi Mal,
Yes, if you have the facilities to dry material - it's the type of record that should be verified with some dried material if you say no Yorkshire records for 100 years - as I say it may not actually be 'rare' but there are few records of it since few people go looking for things at this time of year and certainly not in the depths of winter when it is usually reported !
Without 'teaching granny to suck eggs' (!!) don't forget, if sending it to Kew, send it as ( dried material (preferably in a small box not in an envelope since the material just shatters in the post !) to give ALL the relevant details - date of collection, habitat, substrate, location, county and if possible write some notes about the macroscopic features (striation of cap, surface features of cap i.e greasy (?), small velar fragments, ring on stipe if present, colour, smell if any etc...)
And send enough material to be useful for future use - one or two basidiomes won't last for years of future research so send ample - the spores will already have been shed so it won't damage the fungus !
Nick
PS And please tell me if I'm wrong about the diagnosis - always interested to know if my diagnostic skills are still finely honed ! |

Heard from Kew today and yes it is Phaeogalera dissimulans
So once again thanks Nick.
So to all you out there you do the leg work leave the brain work to Nick and the other experts and then inundate Kew to give the final confirmation. And finally don't forget to record the find with at least one of the databases.

Mal | Thanks Mal - I don't mind doing some brain work BUT (and it's a rather big BUT !) it would be unwise to 'inundate Kew' for various reasons - INTERESTING or POSSIBLY INTERESTING stuff can be sent (I can always suggest it by looking at photographs of the material) but they will refuse to deal with lots of routine collections in the main and, if inundated, will ask you to not send anything else !
So beware !!

I wasn't implying we should send any common finds only the out of the ordinary, rare or unusual.

Mal | I'm sure that you weren't Mal but I had to put that last piece in since when I was at Kew, we did get various individuals (who shall remain nameless) who would just go out on a foray and then send everything in to us for naming !
Often in the fresh state I might add so it was not unusual to open large parcels full of decaying fungi - which as you may appreciate is not a good smell first thing in the morning when one got to work (or in fact at any time of the day I suspect !)
