Cheers J.P. | Hi JP - Looks like Ganoderma resinaceum to me (despite the red band at the edge !) - what did you think it was ?

One of the brackets that I spotted on the conifer;
These two are from the branch that J.P originally discovered the brackets on;

This is the type of thing that should go to Kew for checking especially since you say it was on alder (amongst other things) ...........it does look like Fomitopsis pinicola more than the original image I have to say !
Where was this found as a matter of interest ??

Trying to stay calm about this possible find.
I will be suprised if cybershot hasn't already sent a piece to kew.
If you wish to know location, contact me of conference for details.
Out of interest i had been thinking if it is then where did the spores come
from, as it is within 200mts of main route north from southern ports,
i wonder how many spores come over on the ferries.
just an idea

Cheers J.P. | I hope that Cybershot does send some material to verify the record - very odd that this should occur on three different hosts in a narrow radius (I gather they were all found relatively near to each other) - I was dubious about your first photo but I have to say it does look as if you have been lucky !
I can't answer the spores question - could be numerous ways but most likely high level air currents JP - I don't think anyone actually knows how things turn up in odd locations but the logical explanation would be air currents I guess.
Having said that there are some things eg Clathrus ruber and C. archeri and some exotic 'Phalloids' which have been introduced to Britain in other ways (usually imported spores in straw or wood or even dung) but then there are things like Agrocybe rivulosa which is a mystery species - not even described until a few years ago and certainlt only found in Britain in 2004 (Derbyshire) but now.......................spreading everywhere at a phenominal rate of knots !!! BUT occuring frequently in woodpiles in cemeteries or churchyards (and rather rarely in other habitats) - how does that work ?? I havn't a clue !!

| | | Re: Have i been lucky! Only two of the three discoveries by the three of us were in close proximity. I discovered the newer specimens on Conifer several yards (30 roughly) away from J.P's original find. David's specimen on Birch was found about 4 miles away |

| | | Re: Have i been lucky! Well nick C. if you get a tv appearance out of this remember the spores came from Europe trapped in the feathers of a cuckoo, just the sort of story the press loves.

| | | Re: Have i been lucky! Well, I thought it might be a good idea to post this. It's a young emerging fruitbody.
Does that help at all? Because it doesn't look at all like the specimen in Phillips.

| | | Re: Have i been lucky! Fresh back from my holiday in Cyprus I can now report that Peter Roberts at Kew has confirmed that all three of the original samples on Alder, Birch and Pine are the rare to uncommon species F. pinicola.
Well done the Three Mushketeers!

| | | Re: Have i been lucky! Well , it seems i was lucky.
Part of my original find was sent off and microscoped by Michael jordan within a week, but it is nice that Kew have come back with the same ID.
This week two more finds of the beastie's, one single bracket on betula approx 300 mtrs from cybershot's find, and two brackets on Salix 50 mtrs from my origional find.
It sure is a mystery as to why there should suddenly be this enclave of a rare species appearing.
I can only thank cybershot for his enthusiastic help in sending of material and quality photo's, gess he and nick.C now feel the very wet foray was woth it.
