Day out near Guildford

On Friday I had a day out near Guildford hoping to spot Morchella esculenta. Of course I did not succeed, but I have now spotted every type of 'Morel' apart from a Morel. Still, there were some interesting finds which included...

Laetiporus sulphureus (Chicken of the Woods). Young and growing on yew

A sea of Ramsons

Mitrophora semilibra - one of eight around an ash tree

Another Chicken of the Woods. Again young and on yew

Verpa conica (I think) - one of 12 around a hazel tree. The first for me

Calocybe Gambosum (St George's) - all over the place. I picked 193!

Slow Worm. Not a fungus, but it shows how hard I was looking!

Sounds like a cracking day out Pete, and good to see a 'day out' thread. I'm a bag fan of creating such items. Great with the pictures!!!

I can see a Hawthorn leaf at the base of the Verpa conica!

Hello Nick,

Yes, I enjoyed it! Hardly saw another person - all very relaxing. I think I am getting better at the photo taking too

PS - the 'hazel' for V conic is a mistake (I am a bit dyslexic). The sentence should read: "Verpa conica (I think) - one of 12 around a hawthorn tree. The first for me"

By the looks of it Pete, you had the perfect day. They don't come much better.

Re: Day out near Guildford

lol, John wants to say "They don't come much better if you've not got the Morchella esculenta patch of the century". He's just a very modest chap

Re: Day out near Guildford

Morchella esculenta would have been the icing on the cake but I never though I had a chance of finding Verpa conica. They are very hard to see!
