| | Fungus found at bus stop My son (keen naturalist, eight this week) and I spotted this fungus whilst waiting for his school bus. We aren't sure whether it is naturally this shape or whether it has been attacked by slugs. It stayed there for two or three days before being accidentally squashed. Please could someone help us to name it, and maybe suggest a website which would help us to identify similar finds by ourselves. Thanks!: |

For web sites, try this one, and Roger's Mushrooms. |

J | I believe they are now lumped in to the Morchella genus. (The whole naming business is enough to make me run from the room screaming. Sometimes mycologists are worse than train spotters.) |

| | | Re: Fungus found at bus stop D'you know - I just checked while you were posting your reply and the old Phillips has it as Mitrophora while the new Phillips has it as Morchella with Mitrophora as a synonym.
Just as you think you know something about this mushroom lark, the taxonomists go and muck it up for you |

| | Re: Fungus found at bus stop Thanks everyone, I've done a Google image search and small Hooke and I agree that these names seem correct. I will try to get hold of a Phillips as it seems a vital reference work. Maybe we have a new pursuit here to go alongside microscopy and pond dipping! This looks like a great site, I think we will find it a valuable resource and a lot of fun too. |

| | | Re: Fungus found at bus stop Hi Robert - what I know about fungus (and most other WAB - related subjects !) you could put on the back of a bus ticket ! Having said that, this is a fab place to learn!
But - in all the excitement about there being a new 'Phillips' etc. we forgot to say hello to you as a new member.
So - hello Robert and welcome to WAB! Enjoy your stay with us .
